An air cleaner is the complete intake assembly rather than the element inside it: the housing, the mounting arrangement, the covers and the seals that make the whole thing airtight. That seal integrity is the point. A housing with a distorted cover, a perished seal or a corroded body lets unfiltered air past the element entirely, and no filter can compensate for air that never passes through it.

Assemblies vary by airflow capacity, inlet and outlet arrangement, mounting orientation and whether they include integral pre-cleaning or a vacuator valve. Because of that, replacements need to match the installation rather than just the engine.
