Hydraulic filters keep the fluid in a hydraulic system clean enough for the pump, valves and actuators to survive. Most hydraulic failures are caused by contamination rather than by parts wearing out on their own: hard particles circulating in the oil erode close-clearance surfaces, and once clearances open up, efficiency and control both suffer. Filters are fitted at different points for different reasons, so a return-line, pressure-line and suction filter are not interchangeable even where they physically fit.
