Donaldson Coolant Filters

Coolant filters remove particulate from the cooling system and, in many cases, release supplemental coolant additives as they work. Both jobs matter on a diesel engine. Casting sand, scale and corrosion debris circulating in the coolant erode water pump seals and block radiator cores, while depleted additives allow cavitation to pit cylinder liners from the outside - a failure that ends in coolant entering the cylinder.

Filters are supplied in charged versions, which contain additives, and uncharged versions, which do not. Fitting the wrong one either leaves the system unprotected or over-concentrates the coolant, so it is worth checking against the engine manufacturer's requirement.
